The new Vice Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Prof. Angela Freeman Miri was honoured by members of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Kogi State Chapter yesterday.
The august occasion had in attendance the principal officers of the university, executive officers of ANA-Kogi, as well as members from the Rotary Club of Lokoja Metro.
Giving his opening remarks, the Kogi State Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors who doubles as the President of the Rotary Club of Lokoja Metro, Rotn. (Dr.) Kennedy O. Obohwemu expressed delight at the overwhelming support the association has received from the university over the years. “The choice of Prof. Angela Miri as Patroness of the association was a simple one, considering her track record of excellence”, he noted. He drew everyone’s attention to the findings published by WAEC a few months ago regarding the increasing number of examination malpractice-prone areas (the so-called ‘miracle centers’) across the country, pointing out that Kogi State topped the list so released.
Kennedy highlighted some of the association’s programs aimed at curbing this unfortunate trend. He emphasized the relevance of the ongoing 2017 ANA/ROTARY LITERARY CONTEST FOR SCHOOLS & COLLEGES, a comprehensive competition for all public and private secondary schools in Kogi State, cutting across all 21 local government areas. He expressed optimism that the programs would serve as a veritable tool for community development and foster healthy academic rivalry among these youngsters.
The highlight of the event was the official investiture of Prof. Angela Miri as Patron of the association. A Lifetime Achievement Award as well as a Medal of Honour was presented to her amid cheers from the many witnesses.
Responding to the issues raised by the association’s Chairman Dr. Kennedy, the erudite professor stressed the need for writers to leave a legacy behind for the younger generation to emulate. “Writers live forever,” she said. “Long after they are gone, their works are remembered and they serve as a springboard for discerning minds to catapult themselves to success.”
The university don thanked Dr. Kennedy and members of the association for counting her worthy of this great honour. She pledged her unalloyed support and commitment to promoting the activities of the association. She also accepted to serve as Guest Speaker for the Grand Finale of the 2017 ANA/ROTARY LITERARY CONTEST FOR SCHOOLS & COLLEGES scheduled to hold in September.
