LOKOJA BREATHES FIRE IN HISTORIC BATTLE

The Sub-Regional Finals for Lokoja LGA was held today at Faith Academy,  Zango-Daji.

Twelve schools battled for a place in the Regional Finals scheduled to hold on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at St. Monica’s College, Kabba.

The following schools had previously qualified for the Sub-Regional Finals by scaling over the hurdle of the preliminary stage, which was the Essay Writing Competition:

1. Harmony Secondary School, Lokoja

2. St. Thomas Acquinas Secondary School, Lokoja

3. Faith Academy, Zango-Daji

4. Michael Omonogu Memorial Secondary School, Lokoja

5. Bishop Delise College, Lokoja

6. Anchor International School, Lokoja

7. St. Clement Minor Seminary, Lokoja

8. Yabma International Science Academy, Lokoja

9. Baptist High School, Lokoja

10. Arigbede College, Lokoja

11. Good Sherpherd Secondary School, Lokoja

12. Confluence International Academy, Lokoja.

The twelve schools were split into two groups by open ballot, with the teachers of each school choosing alphabets that depicted which category they would fall into. For example, if a school chose A, the students would be paired with any school that chose B, and so on and so forth.

The two groups were as follows:

Group 1

A. Bishop Delise College, Lokoja

B. Harmony Secondary School, Lokoja

C. Michael Omonogu Memorial Secondary School, Lokoja

D. St. Clement Minor Seminary, Lokoja

E. Baptist High School, Lokoja

F. Arigbede College, Lokoja

Group 2

G. Good Sherpherd Secondary School, Lokoja

H. Anchor International School, Lokoja

I. Faith Academy, Zango-Daji

J. St. Thomas Acquinas Secondary School, Lokoja

K. Confluence International Academy, Lokoja

L. Yabma International Science Academy, Lokoja

According to the open ballot, School A was made to have a face-off with School B, School C vs School D, and School E vs School F in Group 1. Similarly, School G was paired with Group H for the contest of wits, School I vs School J, and School K vs School L.

The three winners in each group competed against themselves, leaving two sub-finalists. Finally, the two sub-finalists were made to lock horns to produce the overall winner for Lokoja LGA.

Winner: Bishop Delise College, Lokoja (19 points : 17 points)

Michael Omonogu Memorial Secondary School, Lokoja vs St. Clement Minor Seminary, Lokoja

Winner: St. Clement Minor Seminary, Lokoja (17.5 points : 23 points)

Baptist High School, Lokoja vs Arigbede College, Lokoja

Winner: Arigbede College, Lokoja (10 points : 15 points)

Group 2

Good Sherpherd Secondary School, Lokoja vs Anchor International School, Lokoja

Winner: Good Sherpherd Secondary School, Lokoja (16 points vs 9.5 points)

Faith Academy, Zango-Daji vs St. Thomas Acquinas Secondary School, Lokoja

Winner: Faith Academy, Zango-Daji (21.25 points : 12.5 points)

Confluence International Academy, Lokoja vs Yabma International Science Academy, Lokoja

Winner: Confluence International Academy, Lokoja (30.25 points : 5 points)

At the end of the Group Stage, the three winners for each group contested fiercely for a place in the Finals. The results are shown below:

Arigbede College, Lokoja (7.5 points)

Winner: St. Clement Minor Seminary, Lokoja

Good Sherpherd Secondary School, Lokoja  (5 points)

Faith Academy, Zango-Daji (20 points)

Confluence International Academy, Lokoja (2.5 points)

Winner: Faith Academy, Zango-Daji

Finally, it was down to the two finalists, St. Clement Minor Seminary, Lokoja and Faith Academy, Zango-Daji. After being bombarded by a series of missiles from English Language, General Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Knowledge and Spelling Bee, Faith Academy, Zango-Daji emerged victorious with 28 points as against the 15 points amassed by St. Clement Minor Seminary, Lokoja.

With this victory, Faith Academy, Zango-Daji will represent Lokoja LGA in the Regional Finals which is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at St. Monica’s College, Kabba. They will compete with other LGAs from Kogi West Senatorial District for a place in the Grand Finale coming up in September.

Looking stressed and worn out after moderating the series of fierce combats, the Kogi State Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Rotn. (Dr.) Kennedy O. Obohwemu who is also the President of the Rotary Club of Lokoja Metro, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise, adding that the far-reaching effects of noble gestures like these will be seen for many generations.

“I’m obviously exhausted, but when I see the genuine smiles of these innocent kids who just want a better society to live in, I don’t mind sacrificing my blood and sweat to make that dream a reality,” he said.

Footprints reports that major sponsors like Grace FM 95.5 and Confluence TV were on hand to cover events as they unfolded. Other notable sponsors whose branded souvenirs were visible at the event include PENKUP Foundation, 7-Up, Reverton Hotels, Thoughtful Touch Foundation, Glo, DHL, Golden Penny, among others.
